The mission of the Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness, in addition to spreading the word that homelessness is a children’s issue, is also to highlight the need for comprehensive approaches to homelessness that go beyond just housing. This includes programs and approaches that serve the additional needs that a family experiencing housing instability might have, including employment, education, child care, and health-related services.

The Beyond Housing Award honors people and organizations whose work exemplifies the idea that homelessness is much more than a housing issue. Recipients’ work goes “beyond housing” to provide services and support to homeless families while keeping the needs of children at the forefront. ICPH is currently accepting nominations for the third biennial Beyond Housing Award, to be presented at the 2018 Beyond Housing Conference taking place in New York City, January 10-12, 2018.

Individuals and organizations (non-profit, for-profit, and government) are eligible to be nominated. Nominees should fit into one of these four categories:

  1. Service Provision: Pioneering and comprehensive program and service provisions addressing the unique and complex needs of homeless families and children
  2. Partnerships: Innovative partnerships, especially highlighting partnerships between homeless service providers and other community organizations (schools, libraries, clinics and medical services, children’s services, museums, universities, law enforcement, etc.) that demonstrate an approach to family homelessness that goes beyond housing OR partnerships between government agencies that breakdown bureaucracy and silos in an effort to serve the holistic needs of homeless families.
  3. Media: Innovative use of journalism, media, or social media to highlight the issues of childhood poverty and homelessness (Disclaimer: This award is for an established media outlet or journalist, not an in-house multimedia project. This includes recognized student journalism outlets but not non-published articles or academic papers, non-profit media and  for-profit media outlets.)
  4. Philanthropy: Meaningful charitable donations, volunteer work, and humanitarian efforts focusing on the needs of children experiencing homelessness. For instance, this could be an individual adult, youth, or child; a foundation, corporate social responsibility effort, community group, faith-based group or fraternal organization.

AWARD WINNERS

Along with a commemorative plaque, Beyond Housing Award winners will receive $1,500 to be used within their organizations or to further meet the needs of homeless families. The winner of the Media category is encouraged to write or produce a story drawing additional attention to the issue of family homelessness. If this is a for-profit entity the monetary award must be used to assist a local nonprofit focused on family homelessness. The winner in the philanthropy category will use the monetary award to help a nonprofit organization that works with homeless families and children of their choosing. ICPH reserves the right to award multiple awards in a category or no awards in a category if not enough nominations are received or nominations do not meet basic criteria.
